I’ve often mentioned the sandbag house being built in Jeffereys Bay by Jakkie and Susan Botha from Urban Harvest; well now they are organizing a workshop there to share the skills and experience of building with natural materials. We invite to a practical workshop that is designed to give you knowledge and skills to help you build your own natural home.
The workshop will be led by Jill Hogan, founder of McGregor Alternative Centre who has over 14 years of experience in natural building. Jill Hogan is highly sought as an expert on all aspects of natural homes and has an incredible amount of knowledge and first hand experience.
The course is designed around some theory and practice so be prepared for lots of physical activity.
Some practical aspects that will be covered in the course includes:
- different natural building techniques
- example of building a rubble foundation for a stoep floor
- making wattle and daub inner walls
- natural plastering techniques focusing on lime plaster – from selecting the right earth, making the plaster, applying it and maintaining it
- natural floors – make an earthen floor
The course will be offered in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape and the practical work will be done on a house that is being built from sandbags and earth.
Cost: R1 350 includes teas, breakfast and a vegetarian lunch
One option of accommodation available at R130/ night
